A new report conducted by PHAN looks at whether Pennsylvania hospitals are complying with rules aimed at ensuring patients know what they’ll pay for healthcare. Price transparency rules help give patients information about the cost of care before they receive treatments, and financial assistance policies provide free or discounted care to eligible patients, as required by law.
The results are clear: Pennsylvania hospitals have a long way to go to fully comply with federal and state rules aimed at ensuring patients know what they’ll pay when they seek care. According to PHAN’s assessment, only 5% of PA hospitals are fully compliant with both pricing transparency and financial assistance laws; this means a patient in Pennsylvania has a 1 in 20 chance of going to a hospital that has published fully-compliant information about its pricing and financial assistance policies.
