Why I'm Leaving the Job that I Love

December 9, 2015

A special message from PHAN’s Policy Director, Erin Ninehouser:

This is a tough announcement for me to make, but you’ve been such a big part of my life and our movement for health care that I wanted you to hear this news from me. I am transitioning out of my role with PHAN to take a leap of faith on a new project that’s very near and dear to my heart. My last day will be this Friday, Dec. 11th. Patrick Keenan, our Consumer Engagement Manager, will be taking over my responsibilities. I’ve included Patrick’s contact information below — look for emails from him in the future!

Patrick Keenan, Consumer Engagement Manager (soon to be Policy Director)
Direct: (717) 322-5332
Helpline: (877) 579-3642

The last five and a half years have been an incredible journey and it’s amazing to think about how much we’ve won — and in the face of such staunch and well-funded opposition.

Think about it: people have been trying to reform our broken health care system for nearly 100 years and together, we finally did it. It was a brutal fight to overcome the fear, smear and misinformation that opponents of the ACA spent millions of dollars to create. You know because you were there, every step of the way.

We’re on the other side now, halfway through the law’s third open enrollment period. We closed the coverage gap and expanded Medicaid. We reversed many of the previous administration’s dangerous cuts to vital health programs. And we’ve given peace of mind and real protection to hundreds of thousands of Pennsylvanians, who no longer have to fear being shut out of our health care system.

As a movement, our work can’t stop there. We have to do more to make coverage, co-pays and deductibles more affordable. We have to do more to bring down the outrageous price of prescription drugs. We have to do more to make sure the care we’re paying for is safe, effective and driven by patients, not profit.

Even though I’m leaving, I hope you’ll support PHAN in this next leg of the journey. Any gift, whether it’s $5 or $500 will help PHAN educate and enroll more people, and continue being a powerful force for change in Pennsylvania.

As for me? I’m going to take on a new fight, one that affects every issue on which we work to make progress — and that’s how the right-wing media (Fox News, talk radio, internet comment ugliness) poisons hearts and minds, and infects our politics, culture and communities with cynicism, conspiracy and coldness to the struggles of others. I’ll be working on this with my wonderful husband Dave (who many of you know) through our new non-profit, the HearYourselfThink Project. You can learn more about our inspiration for this project, and the work we plan to do on our website: You can also follow us on Facebook and Twitter

I hope you’ll stay in touch with me, but even more than that, I hope you’ll continue to support PHAN. Join me in making a donation to this incredible organization today!

With deep gratitude for the wonderful work you’ve allowed me to be a part of, I wish you all the best!
