The History of U.S. Health Care Reform: A Presentation at the Lycoming County Historical Society

September 19, 2010 - 2:00pm

Health Care Reform has been a major topic in the news in the past couple of years, but that's nothing new in U.S. history. People have been talking about reforming the health care system since Abigail Adams took her children to be inoculated against smallpox in the 1770s. The 20th century saw one reform plan after another proposed, modified, rejected, or in a few cases even passed into law. We'll examine the different 20th century proposals as precursors for the 2010 Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.

Dr. Alison Hirsch (Ph.D. in History, Columbia University) has taught history at Vanderbilt University, Penn State Harrisburg, Dickinson College, and Penn College of Technology. Yes, I was a history prof before I found my true calling as a health care organizer!
