PA Senate budget would cut children's health insurance

The budget plan passed by the Pennsylvania Senate in early May would mean 12,000 fewer children would be covered by health insurance in the 2009-10 fiscal year.

At a May 27th news conference, Insurance Commissioner Joel Ario described the impact of the Senate's plan to cut nearly $8 million from the amount proposed earlier this spring by Governor Ed Rendell for the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP).

Senate fails to act on health care

In the last scheduled session day of the 2008-09 Pennsylvania Senate, Majority Leader Dominic Pileggi withdrew health-related bills from the calendar, thereby denying Democratic members the opportunity to offer Pennsyvlania Access to Basic Care (PA ABC) as an amendment to a related bill.

Pileggi's action ensured that PA ABC, the House-passed plan to modernize the state's adultBasic program and expand enrollment by at least 200,000 uninsured individuals, would die in the Senate Banking and Insurance Committee.

Newspaper editors call on PA Senate to act on health insurance

Editors from across the state are voicing criticism of the Pennsylvania Senate for failing to act to help the uninsured.  More than 200 days have passed since the Pennsylvania House passed legislation to create Pennsylvanis Access to Basic Care, a program to offer affordable health insurance to 272,000 uninsured Pennsylvanians. During that time, the Senate's Republican leaders have refused to bring the House plan up for debate.

Senator Regola undecided about health insurance plan for small business

The Pennsylvania Health Access Network has requested Senate Banking and Insurance Committee chairman Don White "to promptly schedule a hearing on House Bill 2005."  The request is contained in a May 15th letter to White and the other members of the Committee.
