Health Reform Milestone: Consumer Protections Go Into Effect Today

Today marks a milestone in the long road to reforming the nation's health care system, as several important consumer protections will take effect on or after this date. No longer will insurance companies be able to deny coverage to children with pre-existing conditions, set annual or lifetime benefit limits, or cancel health policies when you get sick.

Some Quick Facts on High-Risk Pools

Within 90 days of health care reform legislation being enacted, the Health and Human Services Secretary will establish a temporary high risk pool that will be open to people unable to obtain coverage due to a pre-existing condition until the Exchange is set up.

The U.S. House of Representatives will soon vote on health reform legislation that will make health care affordable for the middle class, provide security for seniors, and guarantee access to health insurance for the uninsured – while reducing the federal deficit by $138 billion over the next 10 years and by $1.2 trillion in the next decade.

Health Care Supporters Rally Outside Congressional Offices Across PA

Hundreds of health care activists and supporters have gathered at rallies across Pennsylvania this week to call on pivotal members of Pennsylvania's Congressional Delegation to support passage of health care reform.

The rallies were staged outside the offices of U.S. Representatives Jason Altmire, Christopher Carney, Kathy Dahlkemper and Tim Holden. They were timed to coincide with Cover the Uninsured Week and the expected weekend vote on health reform in the U.S. House.

Pennsylvania health reform activists are descending on Washington, D.C. today to deliver a message to Congress that we cannot wait any longer for meaningful health reform.

Activists are headed to D.C. to join a small but hardy group that began a march from Philadelphia to Washington, D.C. eight days ago to make the case for health reform.

Health Care Rally Kicks Off March to Washington

About 150 health care reform activists and supporters rallied on Wednesday to send off the marchers participating in the “March to the Finish Line for Melanie” – an eight-day walk from Philadelphia to Washington, D.C., in honor of one health reform advocate who recently lost her battle with breast cancer after her insurance company refused to pay for the treatment her doctors said she needed.

Pennsylvania health reform advocates - including members of the Pennsylvania Health Access Network (PHAN) - will begin a weeklong march today from Philadelphia to Washington, D.C. in honor of Melanie Shouse. Melanie recently lost a long battle with breast cancer after missing out on critical treatment because she, like thousands of others, could not find affordable health insurance.
