The Pennsylvania Health Access Network is committed to improving the health of our small businesses by making sure they have the tools, protections and options they need to find and secure high-quality, affordable health coverage for their families and employees.

Our "Healthy Main Streets" Project will work to organize the small business (and self-employed) community to push for important state-level policy changes to achieve these goals. This will include:

Educating small businesses about the benefits and new rights they'll enjoy under of the Affordable Care Act;
Establishing a Competitive Health Insurance Marketplace in Pennsylvania that is transparent, offers quality, affordable choices to small employers -- and is easy to use; and
Monitoring and organizing to stop excessive or unnecessary rate hikes in the small group health insurance market in Pennsylvania.

Did you know?

Small businesses are an economic powerhouse in our state, employing over 3.2 million workers.

While a huge majority of small business owners would like to provide their workers with health coverage, only 48.7% are able to afford it.

The smaller the business, the less likely it is to be able to insure its workers. In 2009, less than half (46%) of businesses that employed 3-9 workers were able to offer coverage. Among small businesses with 10-24 workers, the rate grew to 72%, while almost all businesses with 50 or more workers (more than 95%) offered coverage to their employees.

90% of Pennsylvania's 178,500 small businesses (those with 25 or fewer employees) will be eligible for new tax credits under the Affordable Care Act.
