Join us on Valentine's day to help save adultBasic!!

This Valentine's day, health advocates, community members and adultBasic policyholders facing an abrupt shut off of their insurance will come together across the state to call on Governor Tom Crobett to save adultBasic health coverage for 41,000 hardworking Pennsylvanians  before it's too late.

Events will take place outside Gov. Corbett's regional offices on Monday, Feb 14th and will be part of a statewide day of action with events happening in Pittsburgh, Scranton, Philadelphia and Erie.  Health Care Consumers will deliver and read out loud handmade Valentines asking Gov. Corbett to find a solution to save adultBasic.

The Governor has proposed allowing adultBasic to expire and offer those losing coverage the option of enrolling in Special Care, a plan that costs 400% more than adultBasic with severely limited benefits.

The Pennsylvania Health Access Network has been collecting Valentines across the state for the past week:

Contact Us ASAP--We're keeping up the fight for adultBasic!

Everyone,

Thank you so much for sharing your stories! We've been overwhelmed with the media and grassroots response to adultBasic. We've done a ton of work to put pressure on the Governor, the legislature and the Blues to do the right thing and come up with a solution that keeps adultBasic alive, but unfortunately--as you all know--it did end on Feb. 28th.

We haven't stopped fighting for it, though. We've been continuing to keep the issue alive in the media and press key decision makers to act. There is no clear path for bringing adultBasic (or a program with similar benefits by a different name) back, but we are looking at all possible avenues and exploring all possible solutions. We know that Special Care is not a solution, and we know that the huge majority of the 42,000 folks that lost coverage will likely be forced to risk their health or their financial lives by going uninsured or paying 400% more for coverage that just doesn't cut it.

We're going to continue mobilizing around this issue and we need your help! Please contact us directly to share your stories and talk about what we're doing to push legislators in your area to get on board with a solution that brings adultBasic back. Contact Athena at 215-557-0822 ext. 107, aford@pahealthaccess.org if you're in East or Erin at 412-512-9225, egill@pahealthaccess.org if you're in the West.

Self-employed (sole proprietor)

Dear Governor,As a self employed person living and paying taxes in the commonwealth, I find it impossible to afford anything other than adult basic for health coverage. My wife has currently been working without health benefits at her job for the last 3 years, and was going to begin purchasing it independantly this year, however if we both have to purchase it on the "open market" it would be well over $500.00 per mos....this is an impossibility for us. If you must raise the rates for adult basic members so be it, but to eliminate the program entirely is nothing less than a crime....please reconsider.

Please save Adult basic

Dear Governor Corbett:I suffered a heart atttack at the age of 50 in 1999.   Although I have recovered, my state of my health is still precarious.   I am 62 now and have but three years before I am eligible for Medicare.   I have been a Adult Basic recipient for the past five years I am relying on this coverage until then.I work 2 part-time jobs and so I have no employer based coverage.  And I make too much for Medicaid.Double the premium and copays if necessary, but please do not let my coverage expire.Sincerely, Paul Robb111 Caroline St  Apt 417, Munhall, PA   15120
